Once the wall has dried, it can be treated. For flaky or powdery surfaces, start with an exterior masonry stabiliser primer. There are some situations when a stabilising solution isn't necessary and we recommend two coats of exterior paint instead.

The final phase in the preparedness process is to ensure that you and your loved ones are adequately protected. Tape around all windows and pipework is a good idea, in our opinion. Plastic sheets or old newspapers can also be used for this purpose.

• Painting supplies

When it comes to roughcasting, we recommend utilising a heavy-duty pile roller sleeve with an adequate screw-in pole and a roller bracket, because you don't want your roller to fall off the pole. Hamilton barrel brushes are ideal for cleaning your home's outside windows. Finally, we suggest using purdy brushes to clean the remaining woodwork (fascias and soffits).
